Discussion:
[tortech] chances of getting a 2nd-gen iPod mini working with an older eMac?

Catherine has a mid-2002 eMac, still running 10.1.15 (because it does
all she wants). We got an iPod Mini yesterday, which is doing bad things.

It appears as a USB 1.1 drive. It charges from the USB port. But iTunes
will have none of it.

The manuals are confusing. Hidden away in a PDF manual it hints that I
might have to use FireWire. Do you think that the firewire cradle might
help.

I'm not impressed with Apple here. It hasn't just worked, out of the box.

cheers,
Stewart

Hi Stewart,

iPod mini requires Mac OS X v10.2.8 or v10.3.4 or later.

but iTunes 4.7.1, which runs happily on her machine, says it supports
the iPod Mini. And there's an explicit install directory named "10.1.15"
on the support CD.

This is according to my experience and Apple's website.

The original iPod Mini was supported by 10.1.5 or later. USB 2.0 is not
supported on anything earlier than below.

I've not used it with the new iPod Mini, but the Firewire adapter may
function under 10.1.x.

Unless you have huge concerns for application and 3rd party driver
compatibility, I'd recommend upgrading to at least 10.2.8. You'll
notice a big leap in performance, especially if you have the ATI
graphics-based eMac.

..and if you're going to upgrade, wait a couple of weeks and upgrade
all the way to Tiger/10.4.

There's no need, or interest, in us doing this. As long as her machine
can run AppleWorks, FireFox, iTunes and Crystal Quest, she's happy. And
as long as I can back it up over SMB to my NSLU2, I'm happy.

It's a basic 2002 eMac G4 700, with its original 128M RAM. It swaps a
lot, but it works.

The Firewire cable is probably the only way you're going to get the Mini
to work, unless you have the latest USB 2.0 eMac...

Sorry for the multiple replies, it's still early ;o)

That works -- thanks!
