The backlight on my Thinkpad T21 seldom, if ever, works. It's out of
warranty. Does anyone know of a decent place to get it repaired?

I'm wondering whether it's worth fixing at all. The case is cracked in
places, and it's hardly what you'd call a new machine.

thanks,
Stewart

My comments...

If the backlight is out they'll probably need to replace the screen,
which is one of the most expensive parts of a laptop - I suspect it'd be
cheaper to buy a used laptop. Though it's possible that it's just a
loose connection or something.

No idea what 3rd party places fix IBM stuff, but I'm sure IBM would -
you could call and ask what they'd charge for an estimate.

There are lots of places that sell used laptops. I'd check PCUsed and
Auctiondepot (www.auctiondepot.com - note that they charge in USD even
though they're in Toronto) for a week or two to see what they have
coming through, and there's always eBay.

I'm pretty sure it is a loose connection, because the backlight will
eventually come on -- it can be anything from five minutes to seven
hours (!). The display is basically good, and everything else is fine,
it's just the backlight. I'm a bit skint to afford a new machine now,
sadly. A little iBook would be nice.

cheers,
Stewart

Ditto. A little iBook is top of the list once money comes along. For now
I'll make do with my original PowerBook G4/400...
